When my mom came out here to visit, we checked out the green walls at the Miguel Contreras Learning Center and the Los Angeles Food Bank. They both had a decent amount of food on them and were harvested regularly. Still, I think that an equivalent area on the ground produces more than a vertical garden; but the horizontal garden probably requires more water.
