repairs already?

man, i just finished this project. or at least it seems like i just finished it.

the original clear finish i put on my built-up plywood stair stringers is toast. i don't think it had any anti-UV balls at all. so this weekend i did some disassembly and got started with a few coats of paint. exterior grade semi gloss. we'll see if it lasts any longer than my original work. i hope so. i don't want to be tearing the stairs apart every few years.

have you considered replacing your stringers with 2x10 or 2x12? then run pressure treated 2x6 for treads and walk away.

just a thought-

or stainless, that'd be sweet...

the stringers were designed to cantilever. so they are kinked in a way you couldn't do with a regular 2x12. way more strong then a 2x12 could deliver. it helped me avoid 2 more footings and the extra concrete. but yeah.

i looked at your photos, but obviously not close enough.

how unique is your design and are there any limitations? meaning- could i add another landing or is there different spacing with special support/fastening? i don't want to move livestock, i want to increase stair length.

You should fire the guy that designed those steps....

oh yeah. the built up stringer allowed me to do most of the work myself. butch helped me dig two post footings. concrete and digging is no fun with handtools so the special stringer allowed me to halve my work. i documented the whole thing on this blog. the design could be applied to all kinds of situations. shoot me a sketch or send me some pics and i could certainly provide some information.
